BEWARE OF YOUR CHILD’S BOOK FAIR: Scholastic flyers being sent home in backpacks across the country may contain a “Read with Pride Resource Guide” that highlights “LGBTQIA+ children’s and young adult literature.”
Intended for children ranging from newborns to high school, the guide includes a glossary defining various gender-related terms and sexualities and also promotes books portraying these topics while marketing them to children.
One of the featured titles, Llama Glamarama, tells the story of a llama before his “coming out party” and is described by Scholastic as “the perfect pride book for everyone.”
The plot of The Beautiful Something Else, which the guide recommends for children ages eight to 12, centers on a girl who is sent to live with her transgender aunt. While living with her aunt, the girl is taught to question her own gender and decides she identifies as ”non-binary” and prefers ”they/them” pronouns.
Scholastic is ubiquitous in U.S. schools, reaching more than 90% and engaging with 54 million students, according to their website. See the full list of Scholastic’s LGBTQIA+ catalog so you can be informed about what your children are reading this book fair season.
