41% of children in the U.S. used TikTok in 2023, using the app an average of 120 minutes per day.
TikTok derives more than one-third of its ad revenue from youth aged 17 years or younger.
In 2022, TikTok generated $2 billion in ad revenue from its users aged 13 to 17.
TikTok Toxicity
Severalstudies which created new TikTok accounts as if they were the accounts of children found that within minutes of scrolling they were being exposed to videos about suicide.
Some videos encountered in these studies promoted the idea of hiding symptoms of depression so users could “attempt [suicide] in private.”
The same studies, have found that TikTok frequently recommends videos about body image and mental health to children.
An investigation by The Wall Street Journal turned up several anecdotal stories of children who contracted eating disorders in part because of content on the app.
TikTok Endangers Kids
The TikTok platform has been blamed for spreading so-called viral challenges that have led to the deaths of multiple young people.
TikTok has been suedrepeatedlyfor not doing enough to stop a 2022 “blackout” challenge trend in which several children died or suffered traumatic brain injuries as a result of attempting the challenge.
Islamic extremists use the platform to target children with messages promoting “jihad” and encouraging youth to engage in rampant anti-Semitism.
In 2023, TikTok popularized Americans expressing sympathy with Osama bin Laden for a 20-year-old letter he wrote critiquing the U.S.
