Supreme Court appears poised to back opt-outs from LGBT school content

The Supreme Court on Tuesday appeared ready to side with parents in a case pitting religious rights against public school curriculum.

At the heart of the dispute is Maryland’s Montgomery County Public Schools’ 2023 decision to eliminate opt-outs for LGBT-related books such as Uncle Bobby’s Wedding, which portrays a same-sex marriage, and Intersection Allies, which explores nonbinary gender identities.

Following oral arguments, the pro-parental rights group American Parents Coalition released a hub on its webpage titled The Lookout that provides resources parents can use to understand the policies at their children’s schools and understand how to adjust those policies if they fail to accommodate sincere requests for content opt-outs.

“Parents have the right to direct the upbringing of their children to include opting out of material that pushes specific ideologies on children,” APC wrote on its guide page.
