Parents’ Rights Group Sounds Alarm About Risk Of Porn Exposure For Kids

A parents’ rights organization published a report Tuesday sounding the alarm about children’s increased risk of exposure to pornography, advising families how to best confront the issue.

Alleigh Marré, the executive director of APC, told Off The Press parents have a responsibility to protect their children from “dangerous” content online. However, she noted some parents may be unaware of how the risk of exposure has spiked in recent years.

“Unfortunately, as technology continues to evolve rapidly, exposure to harmful content such as pornography is occurring at younger ages, with increasing frequency, and from new sources,” she said. “Too few parents realize that exposure can occur even in trusted settings, and that the consequences can negatively affect children’s emotional growth.”

Marré told Off The Press she advises families to have “really buttoned up” parental controls online, encouraging parents to be “proactive over reactive.”

“You want to always make sure that any of these sorts of exposure are happening on your terms,” she said. “You want the conversation to happen before there’s any sort of exposure.”
