BEWARE OF PRIVATE SPORTS LEAGUES: Since the proposed Title IX change that would allow boys to play in girls’ sports leagues, many states have rightly taken steps to ban biological males from competing in women’s sports, recognizing the inherent unfairness and safety concerns involved. The Supreme Court fortunately stepped in to block the Biden rule, but the fight to keep boys out of girls’ sports is only beginning.

According to the Department of Education, Title IX applies to institutions that receive federal money from the Department, specifically naming public school districts, institutions of higher education, charter schools, for-profit schools, libraries, and museums. Additionally, state-based legislation that addresses biological males playing in girls’ sports only apply to publicly funded schools. This means that not all sports leagues for children are beholden to state bans. Private and club sports leagues still have policies that allow for boys in girls’ sports.

Sports leagues, such as those run by the YMCA and American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO), have policies that allow for boys to play in girls’ leagues, leaving young girls vulnerable to be forced to compete against and share bathrooms and locker rooms with biological males.

Here is a list of sports organizations that allow biological males to play on girls’ teams:

AYSO and YMCA Leagues: AYSO (American Youth Soccer Organization), has adopted permissive policies that allow “transgender players according to their gender identity, regardless of birth certificate and with no further documentation required.”

Similarly, YMCA policies for their swim leagues, which follow USA Swimming guidelines, allow participants to compete based on their gender identity, and their broader camp policies ensure that campers can access facilities such as locker rooms and sleeping quarters based on gender identity, which can sometimes leave parents unaware of their children’s bunkmates’ biological sex. At a YMCA camp in Colorado in 2024, concerns were raised when it was revealed a biological male camper can share living spaces with girls.

OTHER POPULAR, CONCERNING PRIVATE LEAGUES: Other prominent private and Olympic sports leagues also permit participation based on gender identity, with varying restrictions:

  • Little League: Transgender athletes can apply for a waiver to participate according to their gender identity.
  • USA Gymnastics: Allows participation based on gender identity except at the elite level, where stricter rules apply.
  • USA Swimming: Allows biological males to compete in women’s events if certain hormone thresholds are met.
  • US Lacrosse: Recommends participation based on gender identity but defers to local and state guidelines.
  • USA Volleyball: Permits participation based on gender identity with documentation required for hormone therapy in older age groups.
